Interview - Is Tropical

SD3000 - Give us the background, how did Is Tropical start?

Is Tropical - We formed at the start of 2009 and started playing live shows at the end of march. We had known each other for some time and all shared an interest and taste in similar music, so it was a very natural progression to start making the music we wanted to make.

SD3000 - How did you start working with Al ‘O Connel (Klaxons, Big Pink)?

Is Tropical - We were introduced to Al by our manager. We met up with him a few times prior to recording the single which was great because we could really tell we were all on the same page. We were aware of the music he'd produced and engineered in the past and were big fans, he just seemed like the perfect choice. He's great at capturing the energy of a track and that was our main objective.

SD3000 - I don’t know if it’s the lyrics, the drums and the scarves you wear in the video for When ‘O When but it feels like there is a bit of Adam and the Ants in there. Am I right? Is he an influence?

Is Tropical - It's almost impossible to not love Adam and the Ants. We weren't aware of this comparison before, but it always seemed as though he was trying to push things forward in a unique way, which we guess is our aim. It's important as a band to be a package that people can really get into, and he's a great example of someone who did exactly that. It wasn't just about great songs, it was about a performance and costume which is what we aim to achieve with our overall stage performance which contains projected visuals and masks.

SD3000 - What are you influenced by?

Is Tropical - We consider everything to be an influence. Even with something we dislike, we try to turn it into a positive, by making a conscious decision to not sound like this or that.

SD3000 - Are there any other London bands that you are tight with?

Is Tropical - Yeah, there's a bunch of great bands around at the moment. Filthy Boy are incredibly forward thinking for their age with amazing songs and lyrics. Fiction are another great band where everything just seems to work and you can sense something special. Age of Consent are a new band who look like they're gonna smash it soon. Then there's others like Babe Shadow and Gaoler's Daughter who have brilliant pop songs. We've been tight with Mystery Jets from the start, truly super nice guys who make ridiculously good music. Can't wait for there new album. It seems a very promising time for music.

SD3000 - What’s your favourite spot in London to hang out?

Is Tropical - We like to hold a lot of our own parties. So probably each others houses for late post night out fun. The Macbeth is great place to go watch bands, we spend a lot of time there.

SD3000 - How do you go about writing songs?

Is Tropical - It varies quite considerably. We don't have a formulaic approach to songwriting, and this is possibly why our music takes many forms. Sometimes one of us will write a whole song on the guitar and take it to the band, others we construct with programmed beats and put melodies over the top. We wrote a whole song on the organ recently, one of us playing the bass pedals, the other playing chords, and the other playing lead parts whilst using the built in drum machine. It's a fun way to work. Occasionally we'll have a happy accident whilst making a song. On one demo a drum track was dragged into a synth layer accidentally and became the main hook in the song.

SD3000 - What’s the biggest gig you’ve played?

Is Tropical - We haven't really played to massive crowds. We like to play fairly intimate venues where people become immersed in our show as much as we are.

SD3000 - What’s next? Is there a new track coming/ EP/ album?

Is Tropical - Our first single 'When O When / Seasick Mutiny' was just released on the 18th Jan through Hit Club, and we've been busy recording our new single, which we're really excited about. Other than that we'll just have to carry on working hard and wait and see.

Hecuba interview

SD3000 - Are you named after Hecuba the queen in Greek mythology or the tragedy written by Euripides about queen Hecuba in Greek mythology?

Isabella - Its the Euripides one. We actually weren't huge Greek heads or anything but we are into plays and I was reading Hecuba when we started the project. We were particularly drawn to it because unlike a lot of Greek plays it was about real people instead of Gods. The name has this really tough rhythmic quality and its so ancient that its almost future. After reading it we got really into Greek culture and started going and seeing all this classic Greek art. and we were kind of blown away by it. Its so classic and violent at the same time. Now I kind of see the play as a sort of peace statement. In the way that a movie like Clock Work Orange can be seen as a peace statement. The violence is over dramatized and in a way this is what makes it feel so real and revolting.
And there is something of this quality in the Greek sculptures too. There is this perfectly sculpted bust and its nose will be missing or a beautiful muscular body with its arm blown off. We referenced that kind of abstract violence in the record cover for Paradise.

SD3000 - How and when did you start making music? Before Hecuba.
Tell us about some of the science fiction musical projects you worked on?

Isabella - We first met making a science fiction film and our first musical collaboration was called Aldiss (after the science fiction writer). Aldiss was the musical equivalent of a film about the future for us. We designed these incredible costumes and stage plans and really delved into using music to tell a story in this very direct way. Almost like in Peter in the Wolf when each animal is represented by a different orchestral instrument.

SD3000 - How did Hecuba form?

Isabella- Hecuba was formed directly after a move from New York to Los Angeles. When we moved to Los Angeles we were incredibly inspired by the directness of the Californian artist. Walt Disney, Michael Jackson, the Carpenters. We turned our attention towards music that was more pop. Something that we could make and perform without an orchestra. Something more immediate. We became obsessed with the hook. but the storytelling aspect stayed and the strangeness and questioning of the future stayed too.

SD3000 - What’s your favourite sci-fi movie of all time?
Isabella - Solaris by Tarkovsky.

SD3000 - Your videos are great. The music video industry doesn’t seem to be doing well and producers and directors are struggling to get budget. How do you still bring out a quality music video with limited resources?
Isabella - The videos are often an extension of the music for us. When we made Paradise we felt like we had made one half of the Paradise world and that the second half would be completed in videos. Almost the day that we finished mastering the record we were already making story boards for the videos. We both come from and art and film background and so making them is just this incredibly expressive and exciting thing for us. We dont have big budgets for our videos but we do a lot of it ourselves so that cuts out a lot of costs. Jon does everything from directing to editing to design, art direction and wardrobe. For the Magic, he designed and made all of my costumes and taught himself how to make hats so that i could wear the pink cupcake! It was amazing and these costumes were made with so much love that they just really spilled into my character and informed her loneliness and way of being. He nailed every stud into his suffering jacket and i think that this kind attention just shines through budget or no. We also work and collaborate with so many incredible artists. Isaiah Seret (who collaborated with Jon on the direction Suffering and The Magic) is incredible. The three of us spent months together creating the worlds for the videos really pushing each other. And then there are people like Ben Kutsko who did all the special effects. And so many friends that came and acted. When you have a group of people working together its like anything can happen.

SD3000 - How did it happen that Devendra Banhart starred in your video for Suffering?
Isabella - Devendra is an old friend and has always been incredibly supportive of our music. He wad the first artist that we ever toured with and is a constant inspiration. he was such an insane greaser! i mean he really hit the character perfectly. Brando couldn't have hit it harder.
There is this pretty incredible community of musicians and artists in Los Angeles right now and its pretty great how everyone goes out to bat for each other. Everyone of the actors in Suffering is an artist that we admire and they came and just did it. it was really beautiful.

SD3000 - Some people classify you as art-pop and some people even go so far as to classify Lady Gaga as art-pop. What would you say to that?
Isabella - we really like when pop and art become the same thing. and it seems like lady gaga does too. I love that she is bringing a different sense of fashion back to the pop world. one of favorite performances i have seen was a video of grace jones performing at paradise garage. she comes out onto the stage completely nude save for a painting on her body by Keith herring. it was awe inspiring and its nice to see some of that hutspa being put back back in music. Anything that hacks away at puritanism seem like a good thing to me. I read an interview in which Gaga said that she imagines what she will perform her music in when she is writing it. The deep tie between her music and fashion is beautiful. I like when the music can pour out into everything - films, clothes, painting, acrobatics all of it.

SD3000 - Your music is very diverse, are there any constant influences or does it change for every track?
Isabella - Each song on Paradise was meant to be like a separate world. almost like a short film. and every film was very different and drew from its own influences and characters. We were especially effect by Stanley Kubric, Charlie Chaplin, Kanye West, Jeff Koons and Walt Disney. The way that they use sound and silence is so incredible. And again all these artists make art that is pop. We watched Bambi before we began recording Paradise and we were blow away. Its crazy this crazy japanese haiku painting that everyone can relate too. The feelings are so deep that anything flys emotionally and musically. The music is crazy! It makes todays avante garde sound tame.

SD3000 - What’s happening in LA at the moment?
Isabella - today it is raining. we are in the studio recording our next album and the huge sheets of rain are make recording difficult. every night so many great artists are bringing something new: Lucky Dragons, We Are The World, Glasser and Rainbow Arbia. and dance! dance is happening everywhere. my sister is a dancer and sometimes i will be driving down sunset and she and her troupe will be doing a spontaneous performance at a stop light. and fifty people will pop up and give it all up and then the light turns green and its go time.

SD3000 - Where do you like going out to?

Isabella - There are two nights in LA which are really amazing.
One is called A club Called Rhonda. Its once a month. Last month they converted a ninety twenties flamenco bar into the best dance party you have ever seen. I like it because you can dance or sit in a booth and look at incredibly dressed people and lights lights lights. they always have fantastic djs and music.

the other is called Wildness and it is once a week in an old mexican bar. we played a show there once. it has a checkered dance floor and pictures of starlets on the wall. its the kind of place you dream about. you can't be there without imagining Rebecca Del Rio belting out some Roy Orbison in a bar top dream.

A quick Q&A about rock, tattoos and leather pants with Toronto's Lioness. Vanessa Fischer lead vocals & synths, Ronnie Morris - bass & loops and Jeff Scheven - drums and machines.

SD3000 - You seem to have a pretty diverse following, from rock kids to dance, how would you describe your music?
Vanessa - Dark modern Soul. Dance you can rock to, rock you can dance to.

SD3000 - The pounding bass reminds me of Grand Funk Railroad, where do you draw your influences from?
Vanessa - We draw our influences from a lot things -film, art, fashion dreams... We definitely love the 70’s aesthetic. Big, loud, soul, power. Funny enough Ronnie had just suggested we do a cover of Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother.

SD3000 - Has it been difficult to move away from the work you’ve done before in your previous bands?
Vanessa - I don’t think you can ever move away from the work you’ve done. What you’ve done in the past will always be a part of you, but we are always looking forward.

SD3000 - If Lioness could re-do the soundtrack to any movie, which movie would it be? I nominate Mad Max, maybe a duet with Tina.
Vanessa - Sounds perfect. Do you think Mel Gibson would do a fourth? I would also love to do Suspiria with Goblin.

SD3000 - What’s the most rock and roll thing you’ve done in your life?
Vanessa - Well… When C.C. was on tour, with the Cult they had a bar stay open late, and Ronnie had so many shots, he had to be carried out in a stretcher and have his stomach pumped. I danced on a bar once, had my hair catch fire, stepped on broken glass and got stitches.

SD3000 - Have you ever worn leather pants?
Vanessa - No. Although, I did have some set aside for Ronnie to wear, he was going to go as Mad Max for Halloween.

SD3000 - How many tattoos do you have? What are they?
Vanessa - Collectively we have 17. Including Le Petit Prince, the Crass symbol, and the Boatman of the River Styx from Clash of Titans.

SD3000 - Any new bands that you’re into that we should be checking out?
Vanessa - Everything all the Time, Flowers of Hell, Dynamo Coleopetera.

SD3000 - Are you working on anything new in the studio at the moment?
Vanessa - Lots of new rhythms and moods. We have big plans for 2010. We are busy working on a full-length record that will come out in the fall. We just finished recording two songs just yesterday, and hope to release the first single in the spring.

SD3000 - What’s the name of the latest track you’re working on?
Vanessa - Golden Thorn

Clubfeet is currently working on their follow up album to Gold on Gold. They kindly granted us a quick Q&A between sailing the Gold Coast and jet-setting to New York to work with Peter Gabriel. Once aptly described as "music for models to do their hair to" or "the Teenagers on ecstacy" the 12" for "Count your lovers" will be out soon and we have the cover art which "no-one has seen yet".

SD3000: Which do you prefer, yachting or polo?
CLUBFEET: We really like long walks on the beach and open fireplaces, but we are creatures of the ocean first and foremost. Monty says yachting is like skating on the belly of god.

SD3000: Sebastian, Monty, Yves... Are those your real names? Because they really do sound like names of polo players.
CLUBFEET: That’s rich coming from a Disney character! We all have to live with our handicaps and try to make do in this world. Can you imagine what foul things happened to Yves at boarding school?

SD3000: Do you all have models as girlfriends?
CLUBFEET: Monty dated a L’oreal hand model for a few years but was sick of not being able to hi-five her and ended up dating a college basketballer named Tyrone instead. HI FIVE!

SD3000: Clubfeet is a great name but a little bit disturbing when you Google it. Do any of you have clubfeet or wear a big shoe?
CLUBFEET: It was actually the name of a terrible nightclub we all used to go to in Biarritz when we were teenagers on holiday with our parents. We’re more into hand-puppets than shoes.

SD3000: How did you guys get together as a band?
CLUBFEET: We have all known each other since child hood and played in other bands but never started our own. Sebastian and Yves went to school together (for a moment their parents both lived in Cape Town in South Africa actually) and Monty’s great grandfather invented a diamond drill used in oil wells but lost everything in the depression so Monty’s dad was a cleaner at Seb and Yves’ school – they took young Monty under their wings. He didn’t fly but they’ve always been best friends.

SD3000: It seems Australia is a hotbed for alternative dance music, is there a big scene out there?
CLUBFEET: There is really just an awful lot of music made in Australia in general, and a lot of it is only now starting to get out into the world. In the past only pub rock type bands really seemed to make it here, but because of the internet now people get a chance to find out about all the things that used to disappear under the hot hot sun.

SD3000: What are your favourite new Australian artists?
CLUBFEET: Ahhh so many! The Middle East, Canyons, Faux Pas, Miami Horror, The Transients, Fish Called Salmon

SD3000: Your album Gold on Gold has been out for a bit, are you working on anything new?
CLUBFEET: YES!! We are making the new record right now – we are off to NY in March to finish off the mixes. We are also going to meet up with Peter Gabriel in London for some other tracks we are doing… Sebastian is working on a new record (presently untitled) which is the most beautiful thing I’ve ever heard in my life. I cried and that is the truth.

SD3000: Can you explain to me what the difference is between starboard and port?
CLUBFEET: Starboard is what you yell at the skipper when you want to veer towards the swimming pontoon.

DORIAN - australia was pretty cool, new york again, San Francisco, Sweden

DORIAN - He sent us a treatment for the song and we liked it, it was simple like that, hes a really funny and creative guy

After a few final listens just to make sure everything's as it should be, Gregg Gillis-- aka mainstream-mining maximalist mashupper Girl Talk-- will release his fourth LP, Feed the Animals, via the Illegal Art label site. Gillis expects the album to hit the web "Wednesday or Thursday" of this week, with a physical release to follow. (The CD is due on Illegal Art, while the vinyl will be handled by Wham City.)

I'm personally really looking forward to his next release, just unfortunate that the album isn't released yet.

Caught up with Gameboy/Gamegirl last week about the 90s revival in Australia and busting moves in general... Oh and check out their sweaty new video.

SD3000 - What's happening in Oz at the moment? It seems like the 90s is back with a vengeance.
I don't even think Australia even knows what's going on at the moment. A lot of acts do have this 90's sound, like Mr Kool & Tuff Stuff, and BMX. At the moment disco is making its big comeback down here. Fidget house is still huge down here. I love fidget house.

SD3000 - Are there any other bands out there that you currently rate?
As i said before, Mr Kool & Tuff Stuff are the best. They put on a crazy live show and can only play for 10 mintues because so much energy goes into their show. Catcall is amazing to play with always and writes amazing music. We played and hung with Bonde Do Role when they came to Australia, and they are so much fun. And I'm really digging the Death Set album. and like everyone, i looooooooove MGMT.

SD3000 - What's next for you guys?
We're going on a big tour of America and Europe in a couple of days. While we're over there we're gonna start recording and writing our album. We hope to finish it before the end of the year. We've got some exciting ideas about tracks and will be working with a fuckload of really cool people on it.

SD3000 - What's your favourite music to rump to?
If im shaking my rump i dig fidget house. When i listen to anything Sinden, Herve or Switch has remixed i usually get a bit too nuts.

SD3000 - Best way to set the mood?
If by "setting the mood" you mean getting ready to sex my girlfriend, i'm usually chucking on some Pnau or The Get Up Kids. That's love making music.

SD3000 - How do you make the perfect fruit salad?
Actually i don't eat fruit at all. only fruit flavoured things. I hate the texture of fruit.

SD3000 - Name one 90s act.

SD3000 - Any moves you can share with us when you're throwing shapes on the dance floor?
You don't need moves if you take your clothes off.

SD3000 - What is your advice. How can we get the sweaty wet and how much is it for the dirty damp?

I was listening to the Graceland album again on a recent trip and was reminded of what a perfect piece of work it is. Using very strong South African musical influences and yet creating a pop album that had mass global appeal. And now it seems Vampire Weekend has done the same. Their name doesn't quite sit comfortable with the music they make but hey, who cares when it sounds as good as this. Paul Simon reincarnated with a touch of new wave and punk? Tell me... Why does it take a band from New York to be friends with Ladysmith Black Mambazo and Louis Mhlanga on MySpace and use their sound to create something very very fresh?

UNIT-R PHOSPHENES PREVIEW

You can preview a few tracks of the much anticipated Unit-R album, Phosphenes here. The sound reminds me of a slightly more electronic !!!. For me 'So Long' has probably the most immediate single potential. Some new Soulwax references (thinking this will mix well with 'NY Excuse') and even a bit of a Cape Town trance thrown in for good measure. This seems a lot more layered then the EP they released a while back. Even the album cover by Kronk feels sampled, like it's taking a leaf out of the Murakami-Peet Pienaar-esque book. Now let's see what the rest of the LP has to offer. In case you haven't heard by now, it's out in April.

We're loving Yesterday's Pupil. The single 'AG Club' is getting a lot of Super Deluxe headphone play. His sound is raw and not over polished. Besides working on two tracks for kidofdoom, this Pretoria-based producer has started working on his own album. So who knows what tomorrow will bring.

SD3000 - How did you hook up with Goran and the guys from Unit R?

YP - They were up here some time back to do a few shows with kidofdoom. They stayed at Johan's, kidofdoom drummer, pad and I was over there helping with some transportation and stuff. I had to take Goran to buy a battery for the (infamous) megaphone. That thing is almost always dead or dying. Anyway, after he got his battery at a garage shop he hopped back in the van and said "my vibrator is going to work well tonight". I had just met the dude...we both burst out laughing! I had a feeling I was going to like him. They are all cool!

SD3000 - Have you played with them before?

YP - Not yet with this project.

SD3000 - You based in Pretoria? Do you gig around there or mainly in Jozi?

YP - Carfax with unit r will be my first Jozi gig with this project. I’ve mainly been doing shows in PTA and CT.

SD3000 - There seems to be a lot of new bands coming out of Ptown at the moment.

YP - Pretoria is delivering the goods. I just finished listening to the Isochronous album. It should be out within the next three months or so. It is going to rock people’s world! I also did some production work on it. The majority was done at B# Studio under the production of the legendary Boksburg Champion J.p de Stefani!

SD3000 - Do you make music fulltime?

YP - Yes, in one way or another. I run sleeproom studio. I play drums for various projects, mostly studio session work and live shows...the corporate stuff! And obviously my baby project yesterday's pupil.

SD3000 - How long have you been producing music for Yesterday's?

YP - I have been fooling around and learning via trial and error since 2004. I studied music and thus also got a bit of an education. I did some audio production subjects in my course but I probably learned more from the Boksburg Champion!

SD3000 - Yesterday's only yourself right?

YP - Yes. I write and record everything myself. But I do occasionally get friends in to lay down some magic. I got a virtuoso guitarist to come in and bust some porno rock and roll solos for some of the new material. It’s so badass!

SD3000 - Who else do you produce for?

YP - kidofdoom, more in their early days. I did some work on their debut album. Isochronous. Shu. Wrestlerish. Master & Hound, BrokenZen.

SD3000 - Are you working on an album right now?

YP - Yesss.

SD3000 - When will it be out?

YP - Aiming for the first half 2008.

SD3000 - How would you describe your music?

YP - It is whatever I like and feel like doing. Its not bound to a specific genre and never will be. If Led Zeppelin makes me feel like writing a rock song, then I’ll explore it. If Depeche Mode rubs off the 80's magic on me then hell, who can deny that!

SD3000: So what's happening in Sydney?
WOW: Everything. Everything at once. For us, a whole lot of shows coming up, we've got about 7 shows in March, and then some more in April. As far as Sydney goes in general, I guess I don’t really know. I don’t spend enough time outside during daylight hours. But I can say the night life is fairly healthy at this time of year.

SD3000: Do you think it's an advantage not to have to break in the States or the UK?
WOW: Well it's nice to have your own part of the world where people listen to your music, but really Australia is incredibly limited compared to the UK & The States. I mean basically we've got 3 major cities that are worth going to & we already live in one of them, so unless you're some huge Australian rock band where they love you everywhere, you’re pretty limited. I'm pretty sure most Australian country towns don't listen to techno.

SD3000: Any other bands you guys rate at the moment out there?
WOW: Yeah there's plenty of great stuff going on, Crystal Castles, Black Lips & LCD Soundsystem all just toured here, and all were nothing short of amazing. Crystal Castles’ bassline sound is so tight. For local stuff, The Emergency from Melbourne, Belles Will Ring from Sydney released my album of 2007 & PNAU gets me dancing (and Elton John too apparently).

SD3000: How did you meet and start working together?
WOW: We actually met working at a record store & have been together (as partners) for a while now, and even though we both always had instruments we never really played together, and I was always trying to start garage bands until one day I became sick of trying to find the right people, bought a synth, figured out computers, locked myself in a room and started writing some electronic stuff. Not too long later we'd written a few songs together and figured out how to play them live.

SD3000: Is there an album on the cards? What's your deal with Metal Postcard?
WOW: Metal Postcard is releasing the 7" for us, and then we’ll figure out the rest later. Sean from Metal Postcard has been really great. We're just going to keep writing songs until we feel we've got an EP or album's worth of material. It might take 2 weeks or 20 years but we're not in the business of rushing it. All of our demo's we're quite rushed, but they've gotten us quite far & we're extremely happy with that, but I think for whatever it is we release next, we aim to have an EP or album of great songs that we are 110% happy with. Every album I’ve fallen in love with as opposed to just liking it, has been one of those records that you can tell the songwriter/s put their whole life into each song not just a few.

SD3000: What do you call your music?
WOW: I actually struggle to explain this so i just use what other people have said... A friend of mind said "garage electro" and even though it sounds kinda stupid, nothing else makes as much sense. Someone else said "hipster guitar dance that will make you shake in your skinny jeans" but i just like to call it "lo-fi spaceship pop"

SD3000: You looking to do a international tour soon?
WOW: Yes, our first overseas trip is in a few weeks we’re headlining the Hanoi International Music Festival in Hanoi Vietnam. Besides that there’s talk of France, UK & USA. But really we’re open to anywhere. I'd love to visit South America for various reasons drug & non drug related, and if promoters in South Africa are reading this, we would love to visit you too!

SD3000: You've only been going for a few months, what did you do before this?
WOW: Well immediately before it, we quickly wrote enough songs for a 30 minute set (barely), but in terms of everyday life we we're still doing what we do now, working boring jobs & just surviving basically.

SD3000: What's the shittest jobs you've had?
WOW: Oh man, probably being an “ice cream boy” which basically involved walking around with a huge tub of ice creams strapped to you in a bright yellow uniform at stadium sporting matches selling ice creams and drinks to drunk jocks & assholes. The constant abuse & physical torment was horrible.

SD3000: Where do we buy your music?
WOW: Well when the 7" is released (March 10 UK, April 1 Australia) you’ll be able to buy it online from Cargo in the UK, the Metal Postcard site www.myspace.com/metalpostcardremixed (there is a list of stockists on there too) and in June it will be available as a digital purchase from IRIS (USA).

SD3000: What's the next wow you're looking for?
WOW: I don't know but it might have something to do with taking acid & waking up in park covered in body paint.

SD3000: How do you go about writing a new track?
WOW: We pretty much lock the door to the back room of our house, close the curtains, turn a strobe light on & the rest just falls into place. Sometimes we just discover riffs fucking around & then we rush to record it before we forget it. Then we spend as much time as it takes arranging it, adding & removing parts, polishing it up & mixing it.

SD3000: What is the name of your next single?
WOW: Common Species – It’s pretty much a double sided single with Common Species on the A side & When You’re Dead on the B side. It’s our first & only release to date.

Love this band. They're a bit like mainlining prozac on a really sunny day at an all-you-can-eat ice cream buffet. By no means new, but still going strong and looking to launch their second album. Is it just me or have the Swedes single-handedly saved pop music? We dropped Emanuel from I'm from Barcelona some questions and he kindly sent us back some answers.

SD3000 - How big is the band now?
BARCELONA - If you mean how many people, I would say if you count all who has joined us live at some moment around 35. But not at the same time.

SD3000 - What are you planning for 2008? A new album perhaps?
BARCELONA - Yes, we're working on a new album. And we'll do some tours as well.

SD3000 - Sweden seems to be turning out some fantastic pop music, like Suburban Kids with Biblical Names, Sambassadeur etc etc. Why do you think Sweden is so suited to producing great pop?
BARCELONA - That question is always tricky! Melodies are important in Swedish music, and I guess that makes the music accessible to others. And there's not much else to do here.

SD3000 - Do you guys all know each other in the pop scene in Sweden?
BARCELONA - No, not at all.

SD3000 - Why are you so happy?
BARCELONA - The songs on the album are based upon the feeling of being in love.

SD3000 - What made you decide to record a song for Britney Spears?
BARCELONA - I thought the whole circus around her was interesting. And it's really more about media than mrs Spears.

SD3000 - I'm sure you know that a lot of Britney's earlier music was produced in Sweden? By Max Martin and Rami Yacoub?
BARCELONA - Yes, I know that.

SD3000 - I've always thought Oops I did it again had huge similarities with ABBA's sound.
BARCELONA - Haven't thought about that, but that's interesting!

SD3000 - Do you guys think you sound the same as the Polyphonic Spree?
BARCELONA - No.

SD3000 - What is the best way to spread happiness?
BARCELONA - To throw confetti.

SD3000 - Name 2 Swedish 80s artists you really like.
BARCELONA - Europe and Svullo

SD3000 - Do you have a favourite place in Barcelona? Like a bar or a coffee shop or just a place you like to go?
BARCELONA - I've only been there twice, but La Sagrada Familia is just amazing.

SD3000 - You've said I'm from Barcelona was inspired by love and vacation, what's your best loved holiday destination?
BARCELONA - I'm really no fan of holiday destinations in a traditional sense, I don't like sun bathing. I really like Paris.

SD3000 - Where is your next holiday planned for?
BARCELONA - I'm going to have a Swedish holiday next time, down in the southern part of Sweden called Skåne. The most beautiful part of the country.

THE DUKE SPIRIT: NEW ALBUM

I really got into the first Duke Spirit album, Cuts Across the Land. It had all the right hooks and packed a solid punch for a debut. So I'm pleased to say that their second album Neptune was released last week. The album was produced by Chris Goss who did work for Queens of the Stone Age and Soulwax and if the first 3 singles are anything to go by this is going to be a worthy follow-up. Oh, and I particularly like the nod to The Modern Lovers on their new website.

Inara George and Greg Kurstin are two talented musicians in their own right. They formed Bird and the Bee after working on Inara's solo album together. As a producer and keyboardist, Greg has played with Lilly Allen, The Red Hot Chili Peppers and Sophie Ellis-Bextor. Singer/songwriter Inara has music running in her blood. Besides her solo career she also sings for Merrick and is the daughter of the late rocker Lowell George from Little Feat.

Inara has performed with the remaining members of Little Feat on a number of occasions and says that they're "part of the family".

SD3000: Music has obviously been a big part of your life. How much of an influence did your dad have on you following music?
Inara: Not really sure how... but I'm sure he has a lot to do with why I'm musical

SD3000: Do you have a favourite Little Feat song?
Inara: I love a lot of them... but Cold Cold Cold is one of my favorites.

Based in LA's Los Feliz area, Bird and the Bee are influenced by 60s pop that comes through in their music and their styling. Their sound is best defined as abstract pop - carried by Inara's strong vocals. The standout track from their latest EP is "Polite Dance Song". It's very accessible and is accompanied by a great video. Another deluxe track is their Christmas single: "Carol of the Bells", you can buy it through their MySpace.

The band is planning a full length album in the fall and their Valentines Day digital EP "One too many hearts" is out, well Valentine's Day. Also keep an eye out for her new solo album. It was recorded with Van Dyke Parks and will be out later this year.

Bitchee Bitchee Ya Ya Ya stormed on the Paris scene with their single 'Fuck Friend'. Their distortion driven glitch punk lacks just as little energy as a Duracel bunny on TIK. We managed to get a chat with Bitchee herself about the Paris scene and the friends she sleep with.

SD3000: Are you guys based more in Paris than London ?
BBYAYAYA: Well, we're totally in Paris now. We came when we started the band to record some music, and I guess we're here now!

SD3000: How many are you in the band and who does what?
BBYAYAYA: When we play live, we are 3: me (Bitchee), and the 2 Ya Ya Ya's. I sing and dance, and Ya Ya Ya 1 plays drums, while Ya Ya Ya 2 plays keyboards.

SD3000: How much of your music is about your live show?
BBYAYAYA: I would say about 99%. We do a cover of Dee Light, you know, " Groove Is In The Heart", but other than that, it's all ours. We also leave a good space to improvisation, we think that was what's missing to electro bands, so, we're trying to push this with new songs, like the instrumental called " Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Oh Yeah", for example.

SD3000: Other than seeing and hearing you live, where do you think your music is
best suited?
BBYAYAYA: On a dancefloor! Although it may work okay in Macy's elevator…

SD3000: The Paris scene seems to be on fire at the moment and has a very distinct
sound - thinking of Uffie, Yuksek and Ed Banger records - what's next?
BBYAYAYA: Hopefully we'll be able to come up with something that will be the next thing! More seriously, other than that, I truly believe 2008 will be the year of the crooners. People are missing melodies and "sunny" harmonies… There are a few bands doing that, and I hope this will be their year. We actually have recorded a slow called " The Day That Changed Your Life", with the help of our man Glenn K. Lamar. It's a beautiful song I think, and I hope it will be part of a possible "slow wave" to come…

SD3000: Tell us about your Fuck Friend? How did you meet? Was it a
formal arrangement or did it just kind of happen?
BBYAYAYA: Ahhhhhh, well, he was an old friend of mine, we just started to sleep together… He was a better friend than a lover, but don't tell him please !

SD3000: Can you tell us who he was?
BBYAYAYA: Sure, this guy named Anthony. We went to school together. I won't say more, he could find me on Facebook!

SD3000: How did you hook up with CSS? Are they your music fuck friends? How did
that remix happen?
BBYAYAYA: Yeah, they are our music Fuck Friends! We hooked up through the band Bonde Do Role. They remixed us for the 1 st single, and we'll do a remix for them when they release a new single. It was cool when we got an email from Adriano (CSS) saying something like "I love your tracks, let me remix you !", as you can imagine…

SD3000: Why did you guys sign with Kitsune?
BBYAYAYA: For cash of course! Do you think we signed for fashion? ahahah… Actually, we signed because their offer to release a few singles really fits the kind of music we make. It's a good exposure, and they happen to be great people too, so…

SD3000: Is there an album on the cards or are you sticking with releasing singles?
BBYAYAYA: We'll do 2 more singles, but yes, we do have an album coming… I would hope by the end of 2008. We can't say nothing about it for now, but it's coming.

SD3000: How did the remix for Au Revoir Simone come about? Your music seems very
different from theirs but somehow the mix really works.
BBYAYAYA: Thanks a lot! Well, we love them, as well as a whole lot of music that is not "banging electronic music", like Moondog, the Zombies, David Bowie, Anthony and the Johnsons etc… So I guess for us, working on something totally different is a good thing. It somehow brings us ideas we wouldn't have otherwise. We did a remix for Poney Poney called "Cross The Fader", and it really sounds like a Motown song played by Money Mark.

SD3000: Are there any other artists you would like to do a remix for?
BBYAYAYA: Sure! We'd love to work on a lot of music, but some huge artists that we love, I think, we'd be opposed to remixing their songs. I love Paul McCartney, but I believe his music is too sacred to be remixed. I think it'd be great to remix Prince sometimes, or Michael Jackson… I know it's not very original, but hey, that's good music to work on! We're about to do a remix for These New Puritans, that's a cool one to do.

SD3000: What's your favourite hangout in Paris? And London ?
BBYAYAYA: Mmmm, in Paris , I would say home. I love the Point Ephemere too, this concert venue we played in September. You can eat there too. In London , I guess Pure Groove is a good place to go to, they sell records and t-shirts (including the brand new BBYAYAYA tees !). Cargo's cool too, to have a drink and hang out.

SD3000: I'm only now waking up to some of the French 80s artists like Jeanne Mas and Princess Stephanie, do you have any 80s weaknesses?
BBYAYAYA: You mean French weaknesses? Of course! (my mother is French…): Philippe Laville, L'Affaire Louise Trio… Pauline Ester. Try them and email us what you think!

Very cool video by a great pop act. The Bird And The Bee has a new EP out called Please Clap Your Hands and this certainly does it justice. Keep an eye out for an interview with Inara George.

I really dig this band. They're one of the tightest local acts and this video isn't half bad for what is essentially footage shot during Levi's Young Guns.

My Belgian friend Pixelspew gave me the heads-up on this video from South African Mitch Stratten aka Nodern. The Joburger appears in the November issue of Dazed & Confused where he talks about the mechanical dog/hyena that appears in this Cunningham-esque video, no coincidence then that the music strongly resembles that of Richard D James. It's still really good stuff and feels a lot different to the rest of the SA scene.

Sweat.X's debut EP Ebonyivorytron has just been released by Citinite, London on vinyl and MP3, so checkit and pop that coochi. The SA launch is happening 27 October at the Old Castle Brewery in Cape Town and promises to be a party. The guys recently returned from their European tour where they got some great reviews from mags like Vice, Dazed & Confused, GQ en Time Out. The EP contains 6 tracks: 'Pop That Coochi’, ‘Ebonyivorytron’, ‘Glitterati’, ‘Sweat X’, ‘Fashionista’, ‘Interstella’. Sweat.X is Spoek Mathambo and Markus Wormstorm.
